Tips for Cloud Computing Solutions Planning

Cloud computing solutions offer more flexibility and scalability and can reduce costs, but cloud solutions can also add complexity and other problems when not planned well.  The first step to cloud success is solid cloud computing solutions planning.  Here are tips to help you get started:

Know the controls

First, determining necessary governance controls is important to ensure proper monitoring and security and to ensure the right financial controls are in place to manage costs.  Governance should be determined before you migrate to the cloud.

Also, who is in charge of what? This is a critical question to discuss with potential cloud solution providers and should be included in your cloud computing solutions planning.  What functions does the cloud provider cover and what functions will your team need to cover?  Review the cloud providers best practices for dealing with disaster and business continuity and compare to your own required response times.  Especially important is to understand who has what in regards to security and where the baton is passed so you can ensure no loose ends.

Know what is cloud-ready

Not all of your workloads and applications are cloud-ready.  Moving an application that is not cloud-ready can cause not only extra work but also extra costs, and sometimes the extra effort doesn’t even lead to the success you’d hope for. Your cloud computing solutions planning should include a review of what workloads and applications are ready for the cloud.  Create an easy ranking system to determine low hanging fruit that could be good first iterations and to highlight candidates to develop requirements for the future.
