AI-Accelerated Cybersecurity: Why Defenders Need Machine-Speed Security

AI is evolving rapidly, and it can feel like cybersecurity is struggling to keep up. There is a growing concern that AI is generating entirely new threats and zero-day vulnerabilities faster than organizations can defend against them. While the idea of cybercriminals leveraging AI to infiltrate your internal systems is unsettling, the reality is less dramatic than it seems.

Good News/Bad News

Believe it or not, AI is not inventing fundamental new threats. In fact, the primary targets of cybercriminals haven’t changed much at all. Even using AI enhanced tools, attackers are still focused on the same weaknesses:

• Vulnerabilities
• Identities
• Misconfigurations

What has changed is the speed and scale at which attackers can carry out discovery and exploitation. In other words, it’s no longer enough to identify and patch vulnerabilities. Today you must continuously detect and remediate risks before your adversary because you are both looking for the same things. You just must find them first.

What does Machine Speed Look Like?

Arriving at a destination first is due to more than raw speed. It means never letting go of the gas pedal. There is no time for rest breaks or complacency. Organizations must move from a culture of compliance to one of Continuous Threat Exposure Management (CTEM).

Gone are the days of annual periodic analysis or quarterly scans to satisfy a compliance report. Compliance requirements still matter, but they represent the minimum bar, not the finish line. Aiming for “just compliant” can slow you down, because attackers move faster than any scheduled review. Security detection and remediation is not both a marathon and a sprint.

Achieving machine speed requires deliberate and continuous action. Key steps include:
• Automating validation of exposures through continuous testing
• Streamlining approval workflows for patching and remediation
• Triggering response actions across security and IT systems without manual intervention

However, it isn’t just about faster detection. Once high-risk issues are identified, organizations must be able to act immediately.

The Role of Mythos

Think of Mythos as a tool that enables time compression and exhaustive discovery at the same time. What once took human researchers days or weeks to discover is now compressed into windows of hours or even minutes. A simple analogy is the shift from a skilled lumberjack with a sharp axe to an automated chainsaw running continuously. Keeping your enterprise safe depends on getting the basics right such as properly configured systems, tightly managed identities, and least-privilege access. Solutions like Mythos do not change these fundamentals. They simply augment the speed at which organizations can identify and respond to potential gaps.

Of course, conquering the fundamentals is a lot easier if your organizational environment was perpetually static. Change, however, is inevitable. If the dynamic nature of organizations wasn’t challenging enough, consider this: while there are countless ways to misconfigure a system, there is only one way to configure it according to best practice. A single overlooked permission, exposed service, or misaligned policy can create an entry point. Attackers understand that this imbalance works in their favor, which is exactly why you need a force multiplier like AI to overcome their natural advantage.

The Evolving Solutions Multiplier

The conclusion here is that prevention or compliance mindsets are no longer enough. Even hardening the attack surface isn’t enough. You must know what the risk is within your organization and be able to exhaustively explore it. Attaining a snapshot into your environment has little practicality. Deploying the latest tool with the latest “recommended settings” is not going to be sufficient. You need to stay ahead of change and move the needle faster than the savvy cybercriminal.
