IBM Z Day 2023 Key Takeaways

This week, Z Systems Solution Architect, Jim Fyffe, and I were able to tune in to IBM Z Day 2023 to hear firsthand from Z system experts. For those of you unable to attend, we identified five key takeaways from the event you may consider as part of your IBM Z and LinuxONE strategy.

IBM WatsonX Code Assistant

IBM is leveraging the power of generative AI with watsonx Code Assistant to make it easier for developers to modernize COBOL applications, including conversion to Java. It functions as a productivity assistant rather than a complete conversion tool. This technology can create microservices by inferring COBOL business logic and it provides a user-friendly graphical interface. The greatest benefit of this technology is that it can accelerate the modernization of mainframe applications. Session replay.

Sustainability

Sustainability was a main talk track for IBM Z Day 2023. IBM is addressing concerns about rising energy consumption driven by increased AI adoption, particularly in its latest Z/LinuxONE generations. They are using AI to identify ways to save energy, emphasizing sustainability as a central consideration in architectural decisions. In the evolving IT industry, responsible computing is essential. Session replay.

Cybersecurity Trends

Quantum-safe cryptography has the potential to be a game changer. It emphasizes the need for continuous self-evaluation to determine your organization’s preparedness. Simple security measures like encryption and multi-factor authentication should be implemented, and awareness of relevant data regulations is crucial. Session replay.

Z Skills – Where Do We Stand?

By modernizing their platforms, organizations can streamline their operations, improve efficiency, and attract a new generation of talent. Initiatives such as internships and apprentice programs are designed to bridge the generation gap in the mainframe industry by providing opportunities for young professionals and students to gain hands-on experience and knowledge in mainframe technology. IBM zXplore (formerly Master the Mainframe) serves as a platform for aspiring mainframe enthusiasts to develop their skills and explore the vast potential of mainframe technology. Session replay.

IBM Z16 Rack-Mount

The updated rack-mounted format offered by the IBM z16 or LinuxONE 4, is crucial for enhanced scalability, security, and reliability. This reimagined design aims to attract clients looking to leverage existing rack structures commonly found within their raised floor. The client provided industry standard rack is a versatile solution that will seamlessly coexist with various colocation environments. The model AGZ offers a compact design while allowing for significant scalability, ranging from 5 to 68 cores and 16TB of memory. Clients have the option to choose between the model AGZ or model A02 when looking for general purpose CPs and the model AGL when looking for Linux-only solutions. Session replay.
